For Families

Mishpacha Shabbat

About once a month, the families of Tifereth Israel come together to celebrate Mishpacha (“Family”) Shabbat.  The services are designed so that children can easily participate and also have some fun! Songs, activities, storytelling, and instruments are used to help children engage in the service.  The service is usually followed by a family event, most often a potluck dinner coordinated by our YAD Group.

Mishpacha Shabbat services are usually held on the first or second Friday of the month; services begin at 6:00pm, and the potluck (or other event following services) usually begins around 6:30pm.

Tot Shabbat & Children’s Service

Tot Shabbat is an opportunity for young families to get together to celebrate Shabbat on Saturday mornings. Parents are also welcome to drop their children off and join our main services.

We usually meet on the last Saturday of the month, which is generally also the same day as Junior Congregation, for the convenience of families who have children participating in both programs.

Families gather at 10:30am in the Youth Lounge (down the hall to the right as you enter through the front doors). After some free social time, our official programming, consisting of stories and songs, commences at 11:00am. We conclude by 11:30, just in time to join the main service to sing Adon Olam together!

Junior Congregation

Junior Congregation is Tifereth Israel’s supplement to the Jewish education offered by Beit Sefer Shalom. The program is for children in 3th – 6th grade and is intended to supplement their classes with fun service experiences rooted in the traditions of the Conservative movement.

Junior Congregation usually meets on the last Saturday of the month, which is generally also the same day as Tot Shabbat, for the convenience of families who have children participating in both programs. Some months, we have to move our Junior Congregation date a week or two earlier to avoid conflicts with special programming, holidays, or B’nai Mitzvah celebrations. We meet at 10:30am in the synagogue’s classroom (just to the right as you enter through the front doors), and the program usually lasts an hour — ending just in time to rejoin our families in the sanctuary for the conclusion of the main service.

Junior Congregation is led by our Youth Director, Raizel Small. If you have any questions or comments, please get in touch with her through the synagogue office at 515-255-1137 or office@tifereth.org.

This educational program is made possible by the Larry and Suzanne Engman Fund.

Confirmation Class

Confirmation class with Rabbi Edelman-Blank 2015-2016 is focusing on “Bible for Adults: Not Just Stories.”  Teens grades 9-12 will receive confirmation after two years, food, music and video game reviews, and a chance to hang out with other cool Jewish people. Meets every other Sunday.

This educational program is made possible by the Larry and Suzanne Engman Fund.

Tifereth Art Club

We are launching a monthly art program for young people at the synagogue. There will be two sessions led by a professional art teacher on a Sunday each month. The kids will be able to complete art projects connected to the theme of Jewish Heroes.

This educational program is made possible by the Marcovis Youth Fund.

Torah Reader’s Club

This group is for our post B’nai Mitzvah teens who are interested in serving the community by continuing to read Torah, Haftarah, and lead services.  We meet with Patrick Courtney at 4:00pm on Sundays. All are welcome!
